Angry people are shouting,
Eating fried chicken.
Say American citizens,
Sitting in armchairs.
“We hate GMOs,”
Growls half the population,
All doing nothing.
“We want privacy,”
Whine blog posts and newspapers,
“No arms for Al Qaeda!”
The loaded ship sails away
I was going to write about revolution. I was marveling at how many people are outraged over things happening that have been passed without their consent, as their food is adulterated without their knowledge and as citizens and taxpayers subside – completely ignored by congress. I was going to rant about how the people should be following Brazil and Turkey’s example: holding protest demonstrations. I was going to wax eloquent on how, if they are not happy they should DO SOMETHING! Why are people sitting on their hands, talking talking like unhappy employees around the water cooler? Why are politicians from the Republican side mocking John McCain as he continues his war mongering that is likely to cost the US taxpayers money they don’t have? Is everybody so sheep-like that they will accept whatever is thrust down their throats no matter how unpalatable is it? There are calls for impeachment of Obama, but is anything CONCRETE being done? Are the citizens of the United States too complacent to do anything?
So, I got thinking about revolution. I read more about Brazil. Then I thought about the results of revolution and how they often usher in a worse situation for the people. Look at how many Syrians have died since a few protesters rose up against their leader and the terrorists factions began to support them resulting in the terrorists killing many of the Syrian people? Go back 100 years to the Russian Revolution of 1917 which ushered in 80 years of autocratic communism removing freedom of the people to go where they wanted, to speak freely and even to BE what they wanted? Another revolution that comes to mind is the Cuban revolution some 60 years ago leading to the end of democracy and thousands of Cubans fleeing the country.
Is revolution the answer? Perhaps the Americans are right not to revolt or even to resort to public demonstrations. Perhaps democracy will win out and right thinking will prevail. Who knows. But it burns me to see so many impositions on the American people and see only politicians talking and comedians mocking and conspiracy theorists weaving their tales and nothing is happening to make the wrong-doers accountable for their actions.
I guess that’s what led to my rather strange haikus. My way of expressing my distress and confusion peacefully. God help America.
